Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge just edged out 2015 MotoGP title rival Valentino Rossi for pole position at Twin-Ring Motegi today, setting the fastest ever lap of the circuit but was still only 0.081s quicker than the nine-time world champion. Rossi looked to have it in the bag with a couple of minutes left after setting a 1’43.871s lap to better Lorenzo’s first effort of a 1’43.990 but the Spaniard had eyes on the prize and set a 1’43.790 to take top spot with reigning champion Marc Marquez almost half a second in arrears on a 1’44.216.
