Portimao ‘my favorite track’ as Moto3 World Championship beckons for Acosta

Pedro Acosta has the opportunity to become the second youngest Moto3 world champion behind Loris Capirossi should he outscore Dennis Foggia by more than four points at Portimao.

With just two rounds to go and a 21 point lead to his advantage, Moto3 rookie Pedro Acosta has the opportunity to clinch a maiden world title this weekend.

If the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider outscores Dennis Foggia by more than four points, Acosta will become the second youngest Moto3 champion - only two days older than Loris Capirossi who won the 125cc title in 1990.

However, a big challenge that’s currently facing the young Spaniard is the stunning form of Foggia.

Not only has Foggia bettered Acosta in each of the last six rounds, but he’s also finished every one of those races on the podium including three wins.

So while Acosta has the all-important lead with just two rounds to go, momentum is squarely with Foggia who has reduced a near 80 point deficit to just 21.

Speaking ahead of his final two races as a Moto3 rider before making the jump to Moto2 in 2022, Acosta said: "These will be the last two races of the season, but also the last for me in the Moto3 class.

"I’m really looking forward to these two races and want to have fun. We worked well in the last round, but we have to keep working hard if we want to finish the season with a good feeling.

"I go well at this circuit, and in the past, we have had strong performances here. We could say that it is my favourite track.

"Also, this year we have had a few days of work at this circuit with the team - during pre-season and also during the season. We have a lot of data, so I think we can do well this weekend."

When Portimao hosted round three of the season back in April, Acosta beat Foggia to the win in what was an epic duel - the same result would crown Acosta as champion this weekend.
