In terms of world titles, two riders stand head-and-shoulders above the rest during the last two decades of premier-class 500cc/MotoGP racing; Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez.

Between them the pair have won 13 of 20 world championship, Rossi lifting seven titles on Honda and then Yamaha machinery, with Marquez winning six titles since arriving in MotoGP with Repsol Honda in 2013.

But both are now going through the most difficult seasons of their premier-class careers. 

Rossi has finished no higher than eighth place to date during his final campaign before retirement, while Marquez sits just seventh overall (with two wins) after what has proven to be a tough comeback from last year's arm injuries.
